After spring-holiday I had a rough return back to work as I had lots of work and new devices to learn. I was almost too tired to do birding. Anyway on the 18th of May I visited Härskiinmutka in the morning and saw some Common Scoters, Long-tailed Ducks and even Greater Scaups. On my lunch-hour I visited Siikalahti and saw a couple of Black Kites and some Honey Buzzards and heard a couple of Icterine Warblers and a Thrush Nightingale. After all this at work there were still some installation work going on, so in the afternoon I decided to go twitching. I drove to Tohmajärvi where an Eastern Imperial Eagle had been quite easily twitched for some days, but after all I found out that on this day observations weren’t really good. Anyway I stayed in Valkeasuo and Holmansuo area for a couple of hours and saw a couple of Black Kites, Hen Harriers and Short-eared Owls and also a 2nd year Pallid Harrier.

On the 19th day I heard a Blyth’s Reed Warbler near home and on lunch-hour I heard a Common Rosefinch and saw a Long-eared Owl in nest. In the afternoon we visited Saari where we saw a couple of Gadwalls in Akonpohja and about 13000 Barnacle Geese and a stunning Greater Spotted Eagle in Pohjanranta.

On the 20th of May I visited Siikalahti a couple of times and saw 2 different Black-tailed Godwits, a couple of Garganeys and in the evening we saw good Long-tailed Duck (2400) and Barnacle Goose (3000) migration. We also heard a Great Reed Warbler and a Citrine Wagtail.

On the 21st day we did duck-counts in Siikalahti and only birds to mention were 5 Gadwalls. On my lunch-hour I saw a Grey Heron. On the 22nd day we did night-counts and heard a Spotted Crake, 25 Water Rails, 6 Greater Bitterns, a Corn Crake and a River Warbler. After the count we visited Kukonkanta where a Common Reed Warbler was again singing. During the day I visited dam-road and heard Savi’s Warbler and a Marsh Warbler shortly.

On the 23rd day we saw a Temminck’s Stint in Siikalahti but nothing else really, so we decided to go to Saari again. There we saw birds almost only in Jyrkilä where we saw about 1000 Barnacle Geese with some Great White-fronted and Tundra Bean Geese and a single Brent Goose, a Whimbrel and 11 Common Ringed Plovers.

On the 24th day we had SSP-ringing again and caught 2 Great Tits, 2+2c Willow and a Garden Warblers, 5+1c Common Whitethroats, a Pied Flycatcher, a Common Rosefinch and 2 Siskins. We also heard a Whimbrel migrating. After ringing we visited cemetery where we found 2 Golden Orioles and in Siikalahti where in small muddy area we saw a Little Ringed Plover. In the evening we drove to Rautjärvi Kaljusenlampi where a Spotted Crake was still actively calling and we also saw a Eurasian Nightjar.

On the 25th of May I saw just some Stock Doves and Gadwalls in Siikalahti but on the 26th day we visited Saari again. Most birds were in Jyrkilä where we saw still more than 500 Barnacle Geese and a couple of grey geese. In Pohjanranta we saw 9 Great Cormorants but nothing else really. So after all we hurried to Siikalahti to twitch a Broad-billed Sandpiper.

On the 27th we made duck-counts again but saw just the same Gadwalls, a Little Ringed Plover and heard a Golden Oriole. But in the evening it was time to go twitching as in Polvijärvi a Scops Owl had been found. With Tahvo Repo and Minna Terävä we drove to Ruvaslahti where we were right after sunset. The weather was changing radically so I immediately took my microphone and started to listen with it. And right away I heard the owl calling quite for in the forest. There had been plenty of twitchers already for some hours but they hadn’t got any reliable observations yet so once I shouted that I can hear the bird there was some action. Most of the people managed to hear the bird but not all. And then it started to rain and the wind was also very strong so even though we stayed there for a couple of hours, we couldn’t hear the owl again – at least not well enough.

On the 28th day only better bird I saw was a Eurasian Golden Plover in Kullinsuo and on the 29th day I after work I started a long drive to Oulu. On the way I saw a Black Kite in border of Vieremä and Pyhäntä and in Oulu I decided to visit an old place for a Terek Sandpiper and luckily there was one bird actively calling and also visible but quite far.

On the 30th day we did a morning trip to Virkkula with my brother Pirkka but saw only some Black-tailed Godwits, a Garganey, a couple of Short-eared Owls and 5 migrating Tundra Bean Geese. We also tried to twitch a Montagu’s Harrier in Oulunsalo without luck but heard a Blyth’s Reed Warbler. In the afternoon we were celebrating our goddaughter Elle as she had graduated from high school.

On the 31st day we went to Oulunlahti where we saw a couple of Common Shelducks, a Common Pochard, 5 migrating Red-necked Phalaropes and Caspian Terns and heard a couple of Blyth’s Reed Warblers and a long-staying White-spotted Bluethroat. We also continued to Vihiluoto where we saw a Ring-necked Pheasant and a couple of Black-tailed Godwits. In Nallikari we still saw 41 Velvet Scoters and a couple of Common Scoters. On the way back to home I still visited Virkkula again where I saw a migrating Rough-legged Buzzard and a few Temminck’s Stints.

Even though I was extremely tired I still stopped in Joroinen where I twitched a Red-flanked Bluetail and also heard a Red-breasted Flycatcher in Ahvenisenmäki and then continued also to the deserted airport where I immediately managed to see a male Montagu’s Harrier. I still visited Vuotsinsuo pools but saw nothing there.

On the 1st of June I saw a Black Kite on my lunch-break and on the 2nd day I found a family of Eurasian Oystercatchers with one baby. Only birding I did at night as I went to twitch a Common Quail to Kirjavalan kanava where I also heard a Common Grasshopper Warbler and a Eurasian Nightjar. On the way back to home I still heard a Great Reed Warbler in Särkisalmi.

On the 3rd day I twitched a Greenish Warbler in Tarvaslampi and in Härskiinmutka I saw a couple of Red-breasted Mergansers. During the day I saw a female Hen Harrier in Tetrisuo and in Siikalahti a Spotted Flycatcher that has been missing totally. On the 4th day there was a family of Canada Geese in Kangaskylä and in Siikalahti I saw a couple of Black Kites and 4 Gadwalls.

On the 6th of June we had SSP again: 2 Blue Tits and a Great Tit, 4 Willow and 4 Garden Warblers, 4+3c Common and a Lesser Whitethroat, a Song Thrush, a Pied Flycatcher, a Chaffinch, 1+1c Common Rosefinches and a Reed Bunting. We also saw a Black Kite and heard a Golden Oriole and a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.

On the 7th of June we had planned to do a night-trip but it was raining so we left at 5 a.m. towards Saari with Hanna and Elissa. We started with a Great Rees Warbler in Särkisalmi and then continued to Kirjavalan kanava where we heard just Blyth’s Reed Warblers and the same Grasshopper Warbler and saw a Hen Harrier. But then in Kirjavala village we found a Eurasian Collared Dove which is a really good bird here! In Akonpohja we heard a Grasshopper and a River Warbler and the next stop was in Pohjasuo where we heard shortly a familiar song – a Booted Warbler! The bird was moving quickly towards north and disappeared soon. We tried to relocate it but after all gave up but when we were driving we saw it again flying in front of us. We stopped and heard it singing again and finally managed to get a couple of pictures too before it disappeared again – and was never seen or heard again.

Next we continued to Pohjanranta and then to Suurenjärvenliete where we saw a Red-backed Shrike and then to Jyrkilä where we saw a Yellow Wagtail and a Hen Harrier. Next stop was in Tarassiinlahti where we were lucky again as we found 2 Black Terns flying with a flock of Little Gulls. It was already the 3rd really good find for this trip. A Collared Dove had been only my 4th and a Booted Warbler the 5th ever in Parikkala and the last Black Tern had been 7 years ago. In Tarassii we also heard a River Warbler and a Golden Oriole and in Kanavalampi a couple of Golden Orioles and saw a Eurasian Goshawk.

On rest of the trip we still heard young Long-eared Owls and saw a couple of Hazel Hens. And once we were back in Parikkala we still went to listen to the Greenish Warbler and found out that there was now a couple.

In the evening we still did duck-counts and surprisingly found a Red-necked Phalarope. The last local bird in Parikkala I had seen in 10 years ago and the only migrating birds in this time I had seen last year. Then I also saw a family of Greylag Geese finally as some other birders had already seen this new breeding species for Parikkala. I also found out that autumn was coming as a Spotted Redshank and altogether 80 Northern Lapwings were heading towards south.

And as the day had been so good, we still did a short trip to fields and heard Great Snipes in a couple of places and also saw a Long-eared Owl and heard a new Common Quail. It had been quite a day!

During the week I saw just the same Black Kites, Stock Doves and Hen Harriers, a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and the first Ruffs of the season. On the 10th of June there was also the first and quite early Great Egret. I also saw the family of Greylag Geese again completely other side of the bay than last time and on the 12th day a Common Reed Warbler was singing next to dam-road tower.

On Saturday the 13th of June we had SSP again and caught 1+3c Willow and 2 Garden Warblers, 5+6c Common Whitethroats, a Chaffinch and a new SSP-species for us a Eurasian Treecreeper. In the evening we went to Saari and saw the same Collared Dove in Kirjavala, heard a Quail in Akonpohja and saw a Long-eared Owl and heard a White-backe Woodpecker in Jyrkilä but nothing else really.

On Sunday we slept longer but then headed to Saari again and visited Siikalahti also a couple of times. In Siikalahti we saw the same Great Egret but in Saari we saw just a Grey Heron, a Whimbrel, a Grey-headed Woodpecker, a Golden Oriole and a Common Crossbill.

After Eastern there still weren’t many birds around. On the 7th of April I saw an Oystercatcher in Kangaskylä and on the 9th day a Great Crested Grebe in Särkisalmi and a couple of migrating Tundra Seans in Siikalahti, 10th day a couple of Curlews and a Merlin and so on in Siikalahti. We checked quite a few owl nest-boxes but they were empty, a couple of Capercaillies were seen and a Boreal Owl female was found in the same nest-hole as in several previous years.

On the 11th of April we were in Siikalahti for several hours and saw a Greylag Goose couple, heard at least 6 Water Rails and a Bittern, saw 7 Cormorants, Hen and Marsh Harriers, White-tailed Eagles and a Rough-legged Buzzard. In the evening I still saw an early Red-breasted Merganser and a Black Kite. We checked some nest-boxes again but again just saw a Capercaillie and found one actively calling Pygmy Owl.

On the 12th day I saw a Wren singing and also found a Nuthatch couple in Siikalahti. In Saari we found a Wood Lark in Akanvaara Tetrisuo and a Lapland Longspur in Uukuniemi Suurenjärvenliete. Then we checked some empty nest-boxes again.

On the 14th day I saw a Greylag Goose in Härskiinmutka and an Osprey in Siikalahti. There was now an Oystercatcher couple in Kangaskylä. On the 15th day my long-awaited spring holiday started and I headed to Kirkkonummi.

I was birding in Kirkkonummi for a couple of days with my father. On the 15th day we visited Norra Fladet where we had Song Thrushes, a Dunnock, Little and Common Ringed Plovers and on the way I saw a Grey Heron. On the 16th day we started at Porkkala where we saw Common Eiders, Long-tailed Ducks, Mute Swans, Great Black-backed Gulls and migrating Red-throated and Black-throated Divers. In Espoo Finno we found Horned Grebes, Shovelers, Gadwalls and Moorhens and in Laajalahti Caspian and Common Terns, Common Redshanks and a Chiffchaff. So I got plenty of year-ticks but noting better was seen.

On the 17th of April we still visited Saltfjärden but saw just some common raptors. During the day I headed toward west and stopped in Salo where I found one Collared Dove after some searching. After all I was in a hurry and did the last shopping in Nauvo before drove to Pärnäinen where I got to Utö-ferry.

I stayed at the deck for whole trip to Jurmo and saw a Hen Harrier, some Velvet Scoters and a flock of Common Scoters. Finally I was on Jurmo island and together with Petri Puolakka we walked to bird-station and soon we had everything ready and went to sleep.

On the 18th of April ringers Petri and Mikko Kormilainen headed to mist-nets very early and when sun started to rise we were watching migration with Vesa Virtanen. There wasn’t much migration except hundreds of small thrushes, mostly Song Thrushes. Also a Bar-tailed Godwit, Common Shelducks and Razorbills were seen. During the day we walked both routes, in west and east. We saw a Golden Plover, a Whimbrel, a Dunlin (schinzii), 60 Purple Sandpipers, a Red-necked Grebe, a Parasitic Jaeger, a Short-eared Owl, a Rock Pipit and a Jack Snipe. We also saw 5 Horned and 6 Great Crested Grebes, a Rook and a Hawfinch and also Petri and Mikko had work to do as they caught for example 422 Robins.

On the 19th day also Teijo Saari had arrived. We saw again plenty of thrushes in the morning and later we saw the first Northern Wheatears and also a male Pallid Harrier. There were now a couple of “schinziis” and even 235 Purple Sandpipers in west. Ringers caught still 242 Robins and so on.

But then the weather turned bad with northern winds and sun was shining from blue sky. So there really wasn’t birds in mist-nets anymore and not much to see anywhere else either. With “Vesku” we were ticking day-ticks for me as I had never been anywhere on the coast on these dates. So even Mute Swans, common ”seaducks”, Common Shelduck, Bar-tailed Godwit, Dunlin, Parasitic Jaeger, Razorbill, Rock Pipit and so on were ticks every day. Of course we hoped to find some early migrants but there really weren’t many birds at all.

On the 20th day most thrushes were Fieldfares and in the afternoon the first Pied Flycatcher was caught and I finally saw the first Tree Pipit. We saw altogether 3 Lapland Longspurs and also a Ruff. Mikko left so Petri was now alone checking empty mist-nets.

On the 21st day the island was almost empty but finally the first Black Guillemot was seen and again one Lapland Longspur. On the 22nd day we saw an Arctic Tern, a Wood Lark, a Great Grey Shrike, heard a Twite that flew right over us and the best bird was a Caspian Gull that Vesku found and the rest of us saw just poorly in flight. On the 23rd day Santeri Hiltunen arrived and the only year-tick was a Common Greenshank and only other birds to mention were 5 Red-necked Grebes.

Because of the island had been so empty I decided to make my stay even worse and stay much longer than I had planned on the island. So on the 24th day we had to visit mainland and go shopping with Vesku. In Parainen we visited Petteby and Mattholmsfladan bird-towers and heard a Bittern and saw a Ruff, a Caspian Tern and a Barn Swallow. We also did some birding in Nauvo forests but found only some tits and a Parrot Crossbill. In the evening Ohto Oksanen and Inga Gröndahl was in the same ferry.

On the 25th day there were more mist-nets and even some birds in them. Right away in the morning a Long-eared Owl was ringed and later also a Blackcap. It was pretty good day otherwise too as in the morning we counted even 12238 Common Scoters which was the record in Jurmo. Also a couple of Greater Scaups and a Common Guillemot and 31 Bar-tailed Godwits, 42 Razorbills, 17 Parasitic Jaegers, a Common Redstart and a couple of Great Grey Shrikes were seen during the day.

But the next days were again very poor. There were more than 500 meters of mist-nets but almost no birds. On the 26th day we saw a 2nd calendar year Pallid Harrier but nothing else really. As ringers had nothing else to do the put up some effort to catch a Jackdaw that was visiting the feeder in the garden and finally it got ringed. Then on the next day there really was nothing new happening.

On the 28th of April we counted 54 Razorbills and 11 Rock Pipit and Petri Vainio arrived. On the 29th day I finally saw a Common Sandpiper and a Common Buzzard was also a new Jurmo-tick for me. Also a Wood Lark was seen. Juha Honkala and Timo Kuusikko arrived and on the next morning Petri and Inga left. It really hadn’t been the best time for Inga to visit from Ivalo.

Finally all hopes for new April-ticks were left to the last possible day but it still didn’t look promising as the wind was still from north. We really tried hard again anyway. In the morning we saw more than 1300 migrating thrushes and later we saw plenty of the same day-ticks as every day. But finally in west we saw a Little Tern which was a month-tick for me. Also a Little Gull and a Turnstone were seen. And finally there were also some insect-eater like 23 Pied Flycatchers and 8 Common Redstarts and also 17 Waxwings.

On the 1st of May the wind was finally turning but still there weren’t as many birds as we had expected. But at least there were some year-ticks. In the morning we saw a Wood Sandpiper and when we were walking towards east with Vesa and Timo, we heard a Hoopoe calling! Then Timo saw the bird on the ground and then flying straight to one of the mist-nets. I hurried after it but it wasn’t stuck at all and escaped when I still was about 20 meters from it. We still saw it once in flight and then some tourist heard it in east and Juha heard it from the bog but after that it was never found again. Other year-ticks were Whinchat 4, Willow Warbler 15 and a Yellow Wagtail. Other birds to mention were a pale-backed Lesser Black-backed Gull, a Caspian Tern, 3 Little Terns, a Marsh Harrier and 77 Chiffchaffs, 20 Waxwings, 38 Pied Flycatchers, 19 Common Redstarts and again we had seen some thrush-migration in the morning.

On the 2nd of May it was my birthday and of course plenty of ticks to be found as the wind was finally good. There were indeed more birds in mist-nets too but again all the ticks were the same as every day. Birds to mention were 115 Greater White-fronted Geese, 22 Common Shelducks, 48 Golden Plovers, 32 Whimbrels, 56 Bar-tailed Godwits, 40 Purple Sandpipers, a Spotted Redshank, 5 Turnstones, 2 “schinzii” and “alpine” Dunlins, 4 Little Terns, 8 Wrynecks, a Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 138 Chiffchaffs and when I was absolutely tired and just back in the station Santeri found a Collared Flycatchers from the eastern woods. With Teijo we decided to go twitching of course. Luckily Vesku stopped us in the garden and we first looked into his telescope to see a Ring Ouzel that he had just found. We hurried with Teijo and after some searching we managed to see a stunning adult male Collared Flycatcher briefly. But soon we had to hurry back to the station as we still had a log to do. Ohto had left in the morning but Lauri Kokkala had arrived.

On the 3rd of May new arrivals were a House Martin, a Hobby and then with Santeri we found an early Red-backed Shrike from west and later also a Sedge Warbler. We also saw a female Smew, a Long-eared Owl, 14 Common Sandpipers, 120 Purple Sandpipers, 11 “alpine” Dunlins, 4 Little Terns, 40 Whinchats, 120 Blackcaps, 147 Common Redstarts, 53 Pied Flycatchers, a Hawfinch and even 7 Ring Ouzels! Timo and Petri left so there weren’t too many birders in the station. Luckily with Santeri we had been able to stay longer than we had planned.

On the 4th day we found the first 9 Common Whitethroats and in west we saw a Great Egret flying over us. In pine-forest we heard a Cuckoo calling and while we were already walking back to the station we found a female-plumaged Black Redstart. Other birds to mention were even 883 counted Velvet Scoters, a Greater Scaup couple, 5 Little Terns, 2 Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, a Great Grey Shrike, 83 Blackcaps, 11 Lesser Whitethroats, 50 Common Redstarts, 31 Whinchats and 52 Northern Wheatears.

On the 5th day Juha caught an early Garden Warbler which we of course went to see. While we were walking back, we saw an interesting looking bird hanging on the next mist-net – a Common Reed Warbler. Altogether we saw 140 Loons in migration. In west we heard calls of a Grey Plover from the sky and in the evening there was a Thrush Nightingale hopping in the grass in the garden. Altogether we counted 45 Oied Flycatchers but still there weren’t more Collared Flycatchers. A couple of Horned Grebes, 12 Spotted Redshanks, 9 Turnstones, 21 “alpinas”, a Little Gull, a Hen Harrier, a Ring Ouzel and a Tree Sparrow were seen.

On the 6th of May it was the last day but still we worked hard. In the morning we saw 180 migrating Loons, and 46 Whimbrels and later 150 Purple Sandpipers and a Ring Ouzel. Petri came back and right away climbed to a nest of a Raven so we got 4 nice young Ravens to ring. Then with Santeri and Juha we had to walk to harbor where we still found a Black Redstart. With Santeri we till spent time on the deck but saw nothing new. From Pärnäinen we drove to Kaarina where I dropped Santeri to wait for a bus and I still had a long drive ahead.

Finally in Lappeenranta I was so tired that I decided to drive to Joutseno Kotasaari to sleep. On the 7th of May I woke up at 5 a.m. and heard a Moorhen right away. I spent a couple of hours by the pools and saw a Black Kite, a couple of Citrine Wagtails, Sand Martins, Garganeys, a Temminck’s Stint and heard a Black-tailed Godwit. I also saw several old friends. Then I drove the last hour or so to Parikkala where I still did some birding after good naps. In the evening I still ticked Great Snipe and Spotted Crake. And late at night my brother Pirkka arrived to spend a traditional bird-tower competition weekend.

On the 8th of May we started at Siikalahti bird-tower where we saw nothing special but of course Pirkka got plenty of year-ticks. Then we headed to Saari where still weren’t any floods so there weren’t too many birds. Anyway in Akonpohja we found 4 Horned Grebes, in Ratila we found a Red-breasted Goose and in Tarassiinlahti 2 more Red-breasted Geese and also an early Brent Goose and in Kanavalampi I saw a Black Kite. In the afternoon we went to ring 4 Ural Owl nestlings but on another nest a female was still on eggs. Later we still went to see a Long-eared Owl on its nest.

On the 9th of May we had the Bird-tower competition “Tornien Taisto”. With 3 Aaltos there were Matti Lötjönen, Miika Soikkeli, Akseli Solasaari and surprisingly also Rami Lindroos and Mika Asikainen – so we got some good reinforcements to the team. It wasn’t the best bird-day so we really had to work hard to get species. So it took 3 instead of normal 3 hours to reach 80 species. Luckily some more pictures were got after that too until it stopped. The best birds in the morning had been a Greylag Goose couple, 4 Gadwalls, 55 Common Scoters, 52 Whimbrels, a Spotted Crake, a Red-throated Loon, a Short-eared Owl, a Black and a Grey-headed Woodpecker, 2 Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers and amazingly only one Coot. But then in a long time we saw nothing new. Only better observation was a Pine Marten that was jumping from tree to tree in the perches on the dam. Earlier we had also see a Beaver. Luckily we still managed to see a flock of 7 Velvet Scoters, a couple of Pink-footed Geese, a Goshawk, a 2nd calendar year Pallid Harrier and a Hen Harrier which was our last and 92th species. This time there were a few towers inland that had got 1 species more than us and of course one of them was Tarassiinlahti.

In the afternoon we visited Saari again but saw nothing new really. In the evening we visited fields and saw some Long- and Short-eared Owls and heard a Great Snipe. On the 10th day we started at night and counted night-birds in Siikalahti. We heard 11 Bitterns, 24 Water Rails, a Spotted Crake and a Ural Owl. In morning we still twitched a couple of year-ticks for Pirkka, including a Wryneck. We still spent a few hours in Siikalahti and saw 2 migrating Black Kites but finally Pirkka had to hit the road as he had a long way back to Kemijärvi. In the evening we still visited Rautjärvi Simpele Kokkolanjoki where we saw a male Grey Wagtail.

On the 11th of May we did water-bird counts and I also saw good migration: 2 Bewick’s Swans, 1000 Long-tailed Ducks, 2500 Common and 220 Velvet Scoters and 3 Greater Scaups. I also saw a Little Ringed Plover and heard a Common Grasshopper Warbler. In the evening we visited Siikalahti again and it was worthy as we saw a Black-tailed Godwit and a stunning Greater Spotted Eagle!

Then we still went to Papinlahti to put mist-nets ready for the next morning and there we saw a Bluethroat.

On the 12th day we had SSP-ringing and we caught 2 Great Tit controls, 5 Willow Warblers, a Blackbird, 2 Bluethroats, 2 Pied Flycatchers, 2 Chaffinches, a Reed Bunting control and a Yellowhammer. We also saw a few Northern Wheatears and heard a Black and a Grey-headed Woodpecker. During the day we visited Siikalahti and immediately saw 8 Great Egrets that had been found earlier. I still visited the tower and saw 4 Common Swifts.

In the evening I quickly packed my stuff again and hit the road. I soon stopped in Simpele Revonranta and twitched a Red-breasted Goose as a Rautjärvi-tick. Then I kept on driving until Salo where I was so tired that I turned to Omenojärvi to sleep in a car.

On the 13th of May I started scanning Omenojärvi at 5 a.m. and soon found a Garganey, a Gadwall couple, a female Smew, Tufted Ducks and Pochards and after 15 minutes waiting there was some sort of alarm and also the rest of ducks came visible from the gull-island – and a male Ferruginous Duck that is spending already fifth summer here was with them.

I continued driving along the coast north and turned to Uusikaupunki Pyhämaa and continued along small roads to Liesluoto. There I walked a half an hour almost to the shore and first heard a strangely singing Common Chiffchaff but continued 200 meters more and then heard even strangerly singing bird which was the second ever Iberian Chiffchaff for Finland. The bird stayed on the top of trees so I didn’t get good pictures but I took plenty of recordings. After some studying I walked back to my car and continued my way.

In Lieto I saw a male Pheasant as a year-tick and then in Rauma I decided to go to Unajanlahti bird-tower where I saw a Great Egret. Then I continued to Petäjäs Rientolahti where it was raining but after some searching I found a Firecrest. Then I continued to Pori where I did some shopping and visited Enälahti bird-tower where I met my friend Petteri Mäkelä but only better bird we saw was a Great Egret again. Then it was time to drive to Kuuminainen to Salokankaanranta where I still managed to sleep a little.

Tommi Salokangas came early and soon also Petri Salo, Sebastian Andrejeff and Tomas Swahn arrived and we packed up the boat and left towards Säppi island where I had been 90 days earlier but always only in October, so it was good to go to the island finally in spring too.

On the way we saw a Caspian Tern and on the pier Jan Lundgren was helping us with our stuff. Some Barn Swallows were flying in the garden of the station but soon it was late so we just arranged our things and were soon ready to go to sleep.

On the 14th of May the routines started with morning sea-watching. Then we walked around the whole island. I got plenty of new Säppi-ticks but only birds to really mention were 7 Shelducks, 9 Gadwalls, a hybrid male between a Mallard and a Pintail, a Horned Grebe, 364 Loons (194 Black- and 32 Red-throated), a Cuckoo, 81 Oystercatchers, a Little Ringed Plover, 4 Whimbrels, 38 Bar-tailed Godwits, a Spotted Redshank, 6 Turnstones, 2 Red Knots, a Temmink’s Stint, a Dunlin, 2 Little Gulls, a Hobby, 6 Bluethroats, a Thrush Nightingale, a Sedge Warbler, a Rock Pipit, 2 Yellow Wagtails and so on.

On the 15th day we kept on trying the good bird but only better birds we found were 2 Nightjars which another one came from the sea in the morning, 9 Red Knots, a Honey Buzzard, a Sand Martin, 6 Wood Warblers, 12 Bluethroats and 2 Rock Pipits. And on the 16th day we counted 3444 Common Scoters and saw 2 Tundra Bean Geese, 2 Horned Grebes, 6 Grey Plovers, a Little Ringed Plover, 36 Temminck’s Stints, 202 Dunlins, 3 Common Murres, 4 Little Gulls, 11 Wood Warblers, an Icterine Warbler, 30 Northern Wheatears, 12 Spotted Flycatchers, 61 Yellow Wagtails, a Rook and the best birds were a Black-tailed Godwit, a Black Redstart and an Ortolan Bunting that I found through the kitchen window in the evening.

<img src="http://www.caligata.com/birdersdiary/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/H0A1828-320x250.jpg" alt="" title="Black Redstart width="320" height="250" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-13529" />

On our last day we had time until 3 p.m. In the morning we heard a Common Rosefinch and lots of scoters were moving. We counted 1818 Common and even 1495 Velvet Scoters. It seemed that the island was almost empty from birds but we still saw a Caspian Tern which was my 32nd Säppi-tick of the trip.

Finally we had to pack and clean the station and head to the harbor. Tommi came to pick up right on time and the island was left empty, the next birders would come in the end of the next week.

In Kuuminainen we still heard an Icterine Warbler and then it was time to say goodbye to everyone. I had a long drive back to Parikkala. I stopped only in Rautjärvi Simpele Kaljusenlampi where I twitched a Little Crake male. I also heard a Water Rail, a Spotted Crake and a couple of Corn Crakes.

Around mid-March the weather had turned warm and snow had been melting faster than ever. Even ice was melting while sun was shining and warm southern winds were blowing.

I had hopes high for many early migrants but migration stayed surprisingly quiet. Most of the birds seemed to come according to calendar but some extraordinary early birds were also seen. Auroras were visible during several nights.

On the 23rd of March I saw 2 Canada and 3 Greater White-fronted Geese, 12 Mallards, 28 Woodpigeons, 5 Stock Doves and 2 White-tailed Eagles. In Särkisalmi I saw 2 Goldeneyes and a Common Merganser and in Kannas a Nuthatch. On the 24th day an early Crane, 3 White-tailed Eagles, a Black Woodpecker and a Fieldfare were in Siikalahti and an early White Wagtail in Kannas. On the 25th day I saw a flock of 30 Tundra Bean Geese in Kangaskylä and a Chaffinch and a couple of Teals in Siikalahti. In the afternoon we finally got a new family-member – a Skoda Karoq. In the evening we went to check a couple of fields but saw only plenty of Lapwings and a couple of Woodcocks. On the 26th day White-fronted and Tundra Bean Geese and Mallards and Teals were seen more. Other arrivals were a Water Rail, 7 Black-headed Gulls, a female Hen Harrier, a Mistle Thrush, a Redwing, 2 Linnets, a Snow Bunting and so on. And on the 27th day there were 2 Water Rails, a Crane and so on.

At weekend we were staying both mornings at Siikalahti dam-road. On the 28th day we saw a Canada Goose, 80 Greater White-fronted, 120 Tundra and 2 Taiga Bean Geese, 4 Wigeons, 2 Pintails, 6 Stock Doves, 8 Cranes, 4 Water Rails, a Common Snipe, 15 Black-headed Gulls, a Common Gull, a Goshawk, a Hen Harrier, a Kestrel, a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, a Meadow Pipit, 2 Mistle Thrushes, already 70 Chaffinches, 2 Linnets, 2 Red Crossbills and 7 Goldfinches and so on.

On Sunday the weather was still amazing but we didn’t see as much as we had hoped. We saw 4 Smews, 8 Wigeons, 4 Pintails, 8 Cranes, 3 Common Snipes, amazing early Ruff, a female Marsh Harrier, a Redwing, a Snow Bunting and so on. We also twitched an early Green Sandpiper in Kannas. We also made a visit to Saari but saw only a Hen Harrier couple in Suurenjärvenliete, some Kestrels here and there, 4 Pintails in Kanavalampi and a couple of Great Grey Shrikes.

On the 30th day all floods had already dried but a White Wagtail was still at Kannas. Nothing else was seen until late evening when I saw a couple of Woodcocks and a Long-eared Owl.

On the last day of March the weather had turned rainy and wind was northern. I still tried to find some March-ticks before work, on lunch-hour and after work but only new arrivals were a Brambling and a Robin which I both twitched. I found only Smews, a White-backed and a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Redwings and a Goldcrest and so on. Late in the evening I still saw a Pochard flying over me and then found some Woodcocks and heard a Long-eared Owl.

After all I had got one new March-tick (Ruff) and 3 more species (Short-eared Owl, Green Sandpiper, Brambling) I saw first time ever in Parikkala in March. Some more birds (Pintail, Woodcock, Robin) I saw the first time ever in Siikalahti in March and altogether 15 species I had seen earlier than ever in Parikkala.

One the 1st of April only bird to mention was a Greylag Goose in a flock of Taiga Bean Geese in Särkisalmi. On the 2nd day we saw even 7 (4+3) Greylag Geese in Siikalahti and also the same female Marsh Harrier but nothing else really. In the evening we went to check some fields and also put up a couple of mist-nets for owls and saw several Woodcocks but it was too bright to catch them but one Long-eared Owl was caught and ringed.

On Good Friday the 3rd of April we visited Saari but there wasn’t big surprises. We saw only 2 Capercaillies on their lekking place but there had been some forest-cuts. We also heard a Parrot Crossbill there. Otherwise we saw just some Tundra and Taiga Bean and Greater White-fronted Geese, a couple of Smews, a Pintail, a Hen Harrier and after all the best observation of the trip were a couple of House Sparrows in Pohjasuo.

When we were just about to head home, I got a message that the second ever Middle Spotted Woodpecker for Finland had been found in Kitee by Kimmo Järvinen. Young birder was with us and he had no possibility to go twitching so after all Hanna decided to drive home and I waited along the main-road 6 for Hanna’s sister Elissa and brother Miika who picked me up and we continued towards Kitee.

Once we got to the right place there were twitchers watching up to one tree. And there the woodpecker was sleeping on a branch. It soon woke up and was active and visited a feeder but then flew behind one building. For some reason I was the only one following the bird and I found it feeding on an apple-tree. I managed to get some pretty good pictures of the bird. Soon other birders joined me but then the bird decided to fly to a forest nearby. Then it was time for us to head back to Parikkala. The bird was still seen in the evening and very early on the next morning but never since.

In the afternoon we visited in Tiviä and saw a Hen Harrier and then in one forest we found a Pygmy Owl. On the way back home we still stopped at dam-road and heard a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.

On the 4th of April it was raining in the morning but I did some birding anyway. Only better bird was a Nuthatch in Siikalahti. Then we headed to Rautjärvi Simpele Kokkolanjoki where we saw a Grey Wagtail couple and a couple of Dippers in Kangaskoski and a couple of Dippers in Lahnanen. On the way back we still found a couple of Rooks in Kangas fields

In the afternoon I saw nothing special so I decided to twitch a Tundra Swan in Savikumpu Alava. It was in a flock of Whooper Swans, Tundra and Taiga Bean and Greater White-fronted Geese. Then I still went to see the same Pygmy Owl again.

On the 5th day we visited Saari again. Elissa came with us. Year-ticks were 2 Barnacle Geese in Lahdenpohja and 3 Coots and a Great Bittern in Akonpohja. In Tarassiinlahti we saw a Marsh Harrier couple but other observations were just some White-tailed Eagles, Great Grey Shrikes and Linnets and so on. On the way back we twitched a Hawfinch that was visiting one feeder in Särkisalmi.

In the afternoon we went to ring a Ural Owl mother which was again very early this year. Then we still visited Siikalahti and a couple of other places with young birder and saw a Greylag Goose, 7 Tufted Ducks and a Beaver which has made a big nest next to Siikalahti bird-tower. It was already getting dark when we still ticked a Pygmy Owl.

On the second Eastern Day the weather was pretty bad but we did some birding anyway. Common and Black-headed Gulls had arrived in numbers and a Lesser Black-backed Gull was also seen in Härskiinmutka. Otherwise we saw just a Pochard couple in Siikalahti and then we went to see a mother Boreal Owl which was already in its nest.

On the 1st of February I did the only birding trip further to Lappeenranta. Satu Kuutti from Savonlinna was in same plans so she picked me up early in the morning. We tried to twitch wintering Robin in Parikkala first, but after very cold night it wasn’t awaken so early. A White-backed Woodpecker was seen.

We did a couple of stops on the way in Imatra and saw a Nuthatch in Neitsytniemi. On the same place we saw a lonely Great Cormorant on the ice along the extremely foggy river. And because of there really was no visibility to the river, we continued to Lappeenranta where we picked up Veikka Kosonen and continued birding.

We tried to twitch wintering Jack Snipe and Woodcock but last very cold period had been too much at least in these places as the ditches were almost completely frozen. Then we headed to Toikansuonmäki where we twitched 5 Twites and 2 Shore Larks that were wintering there. Unfortunately these birds stayed quite far so I didn’t try to get any pictures.

Next we walked along Palosuonkatu ditch but found only a Dipper. We were already driving away when I saw some movement on the ditch and there it was, a wintering Water Rail that was a new winter-species in South Karelia for me.

Next we drove south to Luumäki where we tried to twitch a Hawk Owl. We didn’t find it but saw a Three-toed Woodpecker in flight and a small flock of Waxwings.

At last we still tried to see Common Teals on Reijola but found only Mallards, which was a year-tick for me. I really hadn’t been anywhere this winter.

On the 2nd of February I tried to twitch the Robin again but saw a White-backed Woodpecker, a Blackbird, a Coal Tit and then surprisingly the first ever Merlin in Parikkala in February. Otherwise there wasn’t much to see during the week, just Black Grouses, Treecreepers and one Blackbird in Siikalahti.

On Saturday the 7th of February we finally saw this Robin which also was the first in Parikkala ever in February. In Siikalahti we saw Grey-headed Woodpeckers and a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Long-tailed Tits and again a Blackbird. I still went to Simpele to play ice-hockey and saw a couple of Dippers in Kokkolanjoki.

On Sunday we spent a couple of hours in a hide in Siikalahti and saw again Grey-headed and White-backed Woodpeckers and a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Long-tailed Tits and a Goshawk. We got some pretty good pictures. In Tetrisuo we saw a Great Grey Shrike and in Punnola a lonely Waxwing.

On the 9th day Minna Terävä called that a Pygmy Owl was staring at her feeder, so I went to see it. It wasn’t easy times for the Robin as there were also a couple of Sparrowhawks visiting the feeder and also the Merlin had been seen a couple of times.

On the 11th day there were a couple of White-tailed Eagles on ice in Härskiinmutka and in Siikalahti I heard a Three-toedWoodpecker. On the 12th day I saw a Black Woodpecker in Tiviä and a Fieldfare in Kangaskylä. Otherwise I saw just Grey-headed Woodpeckers and Black Grouses and so on during the week. At weekend the Robin wasn’t seen anymore. Either cold weather or predators had caught it.

On the 14th of February I tried to search for the last Siberian Jay but it hasn’t been seen after the first days of the year. I saw a couple of Hazel Grouses and maybe because of that I decided to drive towards Saari to check if a forest where Capercaillies have leks every year was still standing as we had seen some signs that there would be some forestry work done during winter. Luckily most of the forest was still standing but I didn’t see any Capercaillies yet but I saw one along the main-road 6 while driving back.

On the 15th day we visited our feeders with Harri Hölttä and saw 5 Grey-headed Woodpeckers and Long-tailed Tits and a Great Grey Shrike in Tetrisuo. Hanna of course had seen more woodpeckers as she had been again photographing them from hides. Hanna spent quite a lot of time in hides in February, especially during her winter-holiday week.

On the 17th day I visited Tarvaslampi and saw a Sparrowhawk and a Coal and a Crested Tit but otherwise I saw just the same feeder visitors during the week.

On the 21st day we were photographing a couple of hours in a hide in Koitsanlahti Pito & Palvelu. Hanna had helped to build a hide there for photographers who can stay in this bed&breakfast and rent the hide to photographs feeder-visitors. We got pictures of Grey-headed and White-backed Woodpeckers and Nuthatches and so on. Then we still continued to Simpele Kokkolanjoki where we saw 6 Dippers and a couple of Mallards.

On the last week of February I saw the same birds; woodpeckers, tits, treecreepers and the only surprise was that a few Goldcrests were still alive. At weekend we did the first owl-trip but didn’t hear any owl. Some other birders had heard quite a few recently.
The first bird observation of March was the same Lesser Spotted Woodpecker on our feeder on the 1st day. But on the 2nd day quickly warmed weather had brought already a Herring Gull to Härskiinmutka. It kept some distance to a White-tailed Eagle. Next day there were 2 of both species and later there were more Herring Gulls every day. On the 6th day there were a couple of Great Grey Shrikes and a Black Woodpecker calling in Siikalahti. In the evening we did an owl-trip with Harri Partanen but in windy weather we heard only a single Boreal Owl in Tyrjä.

On Saturday the 7th of March I did the last winter-bird count. I saw a Hazel and a Black Grouse, 7 Rock Doves, 9 Herring Gulls, 2 Black, a Grey-headed, a White-backed and 8 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 5 Jays, 10 Magpies, 26 Hooded Crows, 5 Ravens, 44 Blue, 62 Great, 5 Willow and 4 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Treecreepers, 2+2 Starlings, 8 Tree Sparrows, 3 Bullfinches, 7 Greenfinches and 10 Siskins.

On the 8th day we decided to put one mist-net up to one of our feeders and see how many birds were really visiting it. In 5 hours we ringed 100 birds: 4 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 40 Blue, 40+1 control Great, 3 Willow, 8+1 control Long-tailed Tits, a Nuthatch, a Treecreeper, a Siskin and 2 Yellowhammers.

On the 9th of March I saw the first better bird of the year when I first heard a familiar call from the sky and then a male Bearded Reedling landed just in front of me in Siikalahti. I hadn’t got my camera with me but I managed to get a short video of the bird with my phone. It was already the 3rd observation of this species in Parikkala and Siikalahti in last three years while before that it had been observed only in 1998 and 1999. Hopefully it is getting more common and comes to breed here! Unfortunately this bird wasn’t found later. We also tried to see it in the afternoon but saw only a White-backed Woodpecker. Hopefully 2 Great Grey Shrikes that were also there hadn’t seen it either.

On the 11th day I saw a Sparrowhawk, a White-tailed Eagle and 8 Starling and on the 12th day a Wood Lark was feeding on the side of the road while I was spending my lunch-hour in Siikalahti. I also saw a younger Golden Eagle flying towards east very low.

The 13th of March was the first real spring day as on my short visit I saw 3 Whooper Swans, 3 Lapwings, another younger Golden Eagle, earliest Kestrel ever, a Skylark, Siskins and Redpolls. Atfer work I had to go back and I still saw 10 Lapwings, 2 Sparrowhawks, a Common Buzzard, a Great Grey Shrike, a Skylark, 25 Starlings and a Linnet.

At Weekend we stayed on the dam-road for several hours on both days. On the 14th day we saw 8 Whooper Swans, a Woodpigeon, 4 Stock Doves, 140 Lapwings, 2 Sparrowhawks, a Goshawks, 7 White-tailed Egles, 4 Common Buzzards, 2 Grey-headed Woodpeckers, a Black Woodpecker, a Wood Lark, 28 Skylarks, 30 Starlings, 150 Redpolls, 120 Siskins and 2 Snow Buntings. A Goldfinch was singing in Aittavaara.
On Sunday the weather was still amazing warm and wind was southern. We saw 14 Whooper Swans, a Woodpigeon, 5 Stock Doves, 200 Lapwings, a Sparrowhawk, 5 White-tailed Eagles, 9 Common Buzzards, a Merlin, 20 Skylarks, 50 Starlings, a Mistle Thrush, 20 Blackbirds, 2 Goldfinches, 3 Snow and 2 Reed Buntings.

During the week wind was still southern but it wasn’t as warm but still plus degrees even during the nights. So snow and ice was melting quickly! But for some reason there wasn’t much migration to be seen. On the 16th day I checked some fields but saw only a Capercaillie in Koitsanlahdenkangas. On the 17th day I saw the earliest Common Crane ever in Siikalahti and also a Stock Dove, 21 Snow Buntings and a Reed Bunting. On the 18th day there were no other surprises, but a Kestrel couple was already on their nest-box in Kullinsuo. On the 19th the weather was a bit colder but there were the first 3 Mallard in a small open water area in Siikalahti. Only birds migrating were a flock of 5 Snow Buntings. On the 20th day there was a Canada Goose in still quite small open water area in Särkisalmi.

At weekend we were in Lahti in BirdLife meetings. We went there by train. Only birds we saw were some House Sparrows and a Rook that flew over the railway station.

I saw even 55 species: 66 Whooper Swans, 88 Greater White-fronted and 100 Tundra Bean Geese, 10 Long-tailed Ducks, 4 Velvet Scoters, 34 Goldeneyes, 7 Goosanders, 35 Tufted Ducks, 3 Shovelers, 1 Gadwall, 23 Mallards, 42 Wigeons, 2 Teals (I must mention that most of Siikalahti is not visible on my route but I also see a part of Lake Simpele), 4 Hazel Hens, 3 Black Grouses, 4 Great Crested Grebes, 2 Feral Pigeons, a Common Crane, 5 Common, 10 Herring and 1 Great Black-backed Gull, 12 Black-throated Divers, 56 Great Cormorants, 2 White-tailed Eagles, 4 Grey-headed and 10 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, a Great Grey Shrike, 14 Jays, 18 Magpies, 90 Jackdaws, 3 Ravens and 7 Hooded Crows, 181 Blue, 201 Great, 2 Coal, 2 Crested, 19 Willow and 13 Long-tailed Tits, 40 Bohemian Waxwings, 22 Goldcrests, 4 European Nuthatches, 9 Treecreepers, 4 Blackbirds, 141 Fieldfares, 19 Tree Sparrows, a Brambling, 4 Chaffinches, 55 Bullfinches, 36 Greenfinches, 210 Redpolls, a Red Crossbill, a Goldfinch, 2 Snow Buntings and 39 Yellowhammers.

In the evening we visited Harri Hölttä’s birthday-parties but after that I still went to check some fields with thermal-camera. I found even 30 Woodcocks, 3 Short-eared Owls, a Long-eared Owl, 3 Snow Buntings and a Skylark.

On Sunday we went to Saari but didn’t find as many birds as we had expected. Better ones were 70 Greater White-fronted and 10 Tundra Bean Geese, a couple of Common Scoters, Smews, a Pintail, 5 Teals, a flock of 5 Hazel Hens, a flock of even 153 Black Grouses, a Sparrowhawk, 2 Goshawks and the best birds were a Great Egret in Lahdenpohjajärvi, a Red-necked Grebe in Muukkosenselkä and 3 Mistle Thrushes in Pohjasuo. On the way back we still checked Tarvaspohja where we found a Coot.

In the afternoon I still went to check southern parts of Lake Simpele but found only a few Greater Scaups and saw a Redwing on the way.

I had estimated that it could be possible to see 60 species during the weekend but I got my 60th species only at Monday morning when I saw a Black-headed Gull in Härskiinmutka.

Thanks to stupid clock-changing it was again dark before and after work so all birding I could do during the week was on my lunch-break. As Siikalahti was still open, I visited there almost every day. On the 3rd day I saw 4 Long-tailed Ducks, 3 Smews, 3 Shovelers, 6 Pintails and still some hundreds of Mallards and Wigeons. In the evening we had our Birdclub photo-evening where we showed pictures that we had taken in this area.

In the late evening we still went to check some fields and it paid off when we caught and ringed a couple of Snow Buntings. We also saw 15 Woodcocks but ringed only 2 of them and also a Skylark was still seen.

On the 4th day I saw only the same birds than before but again I went out at night and saw 2 Woodcocks, 1 or 2 Short-eared Owls, a Snow Bunting and on the way back still a Tawny Owl.

On the 6th day I saw again 11 Greater White-fronted and 5 Tundra Bean and 8 unidentified geese. And on the 7th day I saw 3 Gadwalls and a Pintail. The same Crane was still on the same field too and on our garden I saw a Redwing. Then after work I hurried to Lappeenranta Kourulanmäki where a Northern Shrike-type of bird had been for some days already but now some better-quality pictures had been available and it really looked much better than any previous ones I have seen. After 30 minutes searching I managed to find the bird but it was very mobile so I couldn’t really look or photograph it very well. I hope this bird will be caught and positively identified.

On the 8th of November we were checking Lake Simpele from every corner but saw only 155 still migrating Greater White-fronted Geese, a couple of Red-throated Divers and the same duck-species we had already seen. A surprise was seen from our garden when I saw a Grey Heron flying above the lake. In the afternoon Birdclub was doing some collectivework in Siikalahti but meanwhile I was doing the last duck-count. Most of the ducks were hiding or gone but I still saw 2 Canada Geese, 3 Gaswalls, 3 Pintails and also a Common Snipe.

On the 9th day we did a forest-trip but found only a lonely Siberian Jay. Also other birders had seen only a single bird there lately which is very worrying. We have to hope that this is just the bird which had been alone also earlier and the couple is just visiting somewhere… Then we went to Tyrjä where we saw a Rough-legged Buzzard and found a new couple of Nuthatches. And of course we still visited Siikalahti where we saw again more ducks with a Shoveler, 3 Gadwalls and 4 Pintails amongst them. And the same young Crane was still feeding on the same field.

But then came the second cold nights of the autumn (the first ones had been when we were in Hanko). Siikalahti was partially frozen but still on the 10th day I saw a couple of Gadwalls. Most of the birds were gone, even the Crane which was never seen again.

During the week I still did short visits to bays but even though the weather was warmer again, it was very windy and rainy. So I didn’t really find anything new.

Finally I had to give up and count that in the first half of November I had seen 77 species. It was very close to my November-record (79) and I could have easily brake it with some missing species like Barnacle Goose, Red-breasted Merganser, Capercaillie, owls, Black, White-backed, Lesser Spotted and Three-toed Woodpecker, Dipper, House Sparrow and so on. But at weekend, when it was getting cold, I was going to once again to Costa Rica.

In the end of September there weren’t many bird-observations to mention. On the 23rd day I saw a flock of 650 and on the next day 165 Brent Geese. There still weren’t other geese around.

I visited Helsinki for a couple of days and on the 25th day we managed to do short morning-twitch with my father – and after quite a long search we managed to see a Crested Lark briefly in Espoo Vermo.

At weekend we were once again ringing and there really weren’t many migrants around anymore. On Saturday the 27th of September we caught 57+2c Great, 19+3c Blue, 1 Willow and 16 Long-tailed Tits, 11+2c Chiffchaffs, 2 Willow Warblers, 3 Goldcrests, 5 Dunnocks, 10 Robins, 21 Chaffinch, 1 Siskin, 9 Yellowhammers and 1+1c Reed Buntings. We also saw thousands of migrating Barnacle Geese and the migration continued whole day. In the afternoon we did duck-counts in Siikalahti but only better birds were 5 Gadwalls and a Red-throated Diver and 4 Common Scoters that were outside the counting area.

On Sunday the 28th we were in Lietteenlahti and caught 4 Blue, 18+1c Great and 5 Long-tailed Tits, 10 Chiffchaffs, a Treecreeper, a Wren, 16 Robins, 8 Dunnocks, a Chaffinch and 2 Reed Buntings. On the way back home there was a flock of 113 Whooper Swans in Huhmarinen. During the day we went to Saari where we counted 7000 Barnacle Geese in Pohjanranta and 2000 in Akonpohja where we saw also one leucistic bird. Otherwise we saw only a couple of Great Egrets, a Merlin and so on.

On the 29th day there were 3 Tundra (Bewick’s) Swans on the same swan-flock and in Siikalahti I still saw a Marsh Harrier. In the evening we visited fields which were still too dry so only 3 Woodcocks were ringed and on the way we saw a Tawny Owl looking owl briefly. Auroras were extraordinary beautiful!

On the last day of September I saw the first 6 Greater White-fronted Geese but otherwise there were still nothing else migrating. In Liuharanta I saw some 2000 Barnacle Geese and a late Tree Pipit.

On the 1st of October the last Osprey with a blind eye, finally left. Also 5 White-tailed Eagles were soaring on the sky and waited for geese to come finally. 3 Golden Plovers were in Huhmarinen. On the 2nd day there were 2 Pochards, 6 Gadwalls and 8 Great Egrets in Siikalahti. On the 3rd day I found a Nuthatch couple in Raikanniemi.

At weekend we were in Kukonkanta and on the 4th day we caught 13+1c Blue, 44+11 Great and a Coal Tit, a Treecreeper, 4 Chiffchaffs, the first Siberian Chiffchaff for Parikkala ever, 2 Redwings, 12 Blackbirds, 10 Robins, 2 Dunnocks, 2 Bramblings, a Siskin and a Yellowhammer. A very late Tree Pipit was seen. In the afternoon we went to Saari again but saw almost nothing. There still weren’t more geese. In Pohjanranta we saw 5 Great Egrets, in Jyrkilä a couple of Hen Harriers and 2 Kestrels and some Great Grey Shrikes here and there.

On Sunday it was much more quiet: 7+1c Blue and 9+7c Great Tits, 4 Chiffchaffs,a Treecreeper, a Wren, a Robin, a Brambling, 2 Siskins and 3 Yellowhammers. Only other birds seen were a Barn Swallow, 4 Woodpigeons and a Starling. In the evening I visited Siikalahti and still saw a Pochard, a few Gadwalls, and the found a nice surprise a Little Grebe!

On the 6th of October there were still 9 Great Egrets in Siikalahti but otherwise on the next days I saw only a couple of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers and Rough-legged Buzzards. Southern winds were still keeping geese somewhere north. On the 9th day I saw the same Little Grebe again and a young Dunlin was trying to find a place where to land in Siikalahti. At Kangaskylä there were still at least 6 Barn Swallows flying around. On the 10th day we did duck-counts again but only a couple of Long-tailed Ducks, 3 Greater Scaups and still a couple of Pochards were birds to mention.

On the 11th day Hanna was at work even though it was Saturday. I was hoping to go to twitch anything anywhere but of course exactly on that day there were nothing to twitch. So I checked some fields and other places nearby but found nothing. So on the 12th day we decided to make one more try in Kukonkanta and caught 39+8c Blue, 36+17c Great, 2 Willow and 16 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Chiffchaffs, 4 Goldcrests, 4 Robins, a Bullfinch, a Siskin, a Reed Bunting and 2 Yellowhammers. But still we have never caught a single Yellow-browed Warbler or any other better species from east. We saw some thousands of Barnacle Geese, 8 Red-throated Divers, 12 Woodpigeons and 7 White-tailed Eagles. In the afternoon I still went to Saari but it was raining and I really saw nothing.

During the week I still saw 2 Barn Swallows on the 14th day and in Siikalahti there was one poor-looking young Crane which could fly at least pretty well but for some reason it had left behind the others. Finally the winds turned and on a couple of days there were geese migrating but very high and on wide area. Anyway I saw several thousands of Barnacle and also Tundra Bean and Greater White-fronted Geese but only other observation was a Rough-legged Buzzard. On in the end of the week it really started to feel that there weren’t any bird anywhere anymore, a White Wagtail was still on our garden but that was it…

In the end of August we kept on doing same thing as earlier. On the 23rd day we were ringing in Kukonkanta and caught 72 birds; a Tree Pipit, 3 Dunnocks, a Robin, 4 Sedge and 8 Blyth’s Reed Warblers, a Common Reed Warbler, 4 Lesser and 7 Common Whitethroats, 16 Garden Warblers, 7+1c Blackcaps, a Chiffchaff, 15 Willow Warblers, a Goldcrest, a Blue Tit and a Red-backed Shrike.

On the 24th of August we had the last SSP-ringing of the year and it was very quiet. We caught only 2 Robins, 1+1c Common Whitethroats, a Willow Warbler, a Common Rosefinch, a Yellowhammer, 3+1c Reed Buntings and then the savior of the morning, a Common Grasshopper Warbler. In Siikalahti we saw even 52 Great Egrets coming to roost. We also had a couple of mist-nets up but caught only 6 common birds,

During the weed I saw only a Nuthatch in Kangaskylä, a family of Greylag Geese in Kaukola and then we did one night-trip to fields where we caught a couple of Woodcocks, a Great Snipe and 5+1c Skylarks. On the 29th day we visited Saari where we saw only a Gadwall, 2 Hen Harriers, 3 Great Grey Shrikes and a tame and photogenic young Common Ringed Plover.

On the 30th of August we were ringing in our new place in Lietteenlahti but unfortunately in a wet weather we caught only 35 birds; 2 Tree Pipits, 2 Wrens, a Dunnock, 8 Robins, 2 Sedge and 2 Blyth’s Reed Warblers, a Lesser and 3 Common Whitethroats, 6 Garden Warblers, 2 Blackcaps, a Chiffchaff, 2 Willow Warblers, 2 Blue Tits and the first Rustic Bunting of the autumn. A couple of Rustic Buntings were seen migrating too. In Punnola we still counted local 101 Barnacle Geese but a couple of days later there were only 2 birds left and soon they were gone too.

On the 31st day we were in Kukonkanta and caught 60 birds; a White Wagtail, a Blackbird, a Redwing, 12 Sedge, 6 Blyth’s Reed and 3 Common Reed Warblers, a Lesser and 2 Common Whitethroats, 10 Garden Warblers, 8 Blackcaps, 3 Chiffchaffs, 4 Willow Warblers, 12+3c Blue Tits and a Red-backed Shrike. Only Rustic Bunting was just heard migrating. We also heard a Grey Plover calling couple of times from the sky. On the way back home we saw a flock of 20 Common Scoters in Härskiinmutka. In the evening we did duck-counts in Siikalahti and found already 109 Bean Geese which most of them were Taiga Bean Geese but there were at least a couple of Tundra Bean Geese families too.

On the 1st of September the Greylag Geese were again in Kaukola and in the evening we saw a few Great Snipes but they were too shy to catch. Only 2 Woodcocks, a Common Snipe and 2 Skylarks were ringed.

On the 2nd day I still saw the same Greylag Geese and the counted 480 Cranes and 48 Great Egrets. On the 3rd day I was studying the Bean Geese again and saw a Bluethroat. In the evening I saw 7 Gadwalls in Siikalahti.

On the 4th day we caught 2 Woodcocks, a Great Snipe, a Common Snipe and 2 Skylarks. On dry fields there weren’t many birds and most of them were much shyer than normally. I also caught a Bluethroat from one bush and a couple of Short-eared and a Long-eared Owl were seen.

On the 5th of September I visited Saari and found a couple of Red-throated Pipits as a year-tick. Also 4 Golden Plovers, a Great Grey and a Red-backed Shrike and a flock of 40 Linnets and so on were seen. In Siikalahti I saw 47 Great Egrets, 450 Cranes, a Short-eared Owl and a Nightjar which seemed to be common this autumn.

On the 6th of September Hanna was visiting Helsinki so I had time to do some twitching. Together with Minna Terävä and Merja Laari we drove to Kotka to twitch a Short-toed Snake Eagle. We didn’t have to wait for long in Ristinkallio until I found the eagle perched on a distant tree. It flew a couple of times and was hunting and even caught one small snake but unfortunately it never came any closer so I didn’t really get pictures of it. Then we visited a few birding places in Hamina but saw only a Gadwall, some Great Egrets, a Nuthatch and heard a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. In Rautjärvi we still stopped in a couple of spots along Kokkolanjoki and saw 6 Grey Wagtails which one young had a ring.

On Sunday we were again in Kukonkanta and caught 92 birds; 3 Tree Pipits, a Wren, 2 Dunnocks, 6 Robins, 4 Bluethroats, 2 Sedge and 2 Blyth’s Reed Warblers, a Common Whitethroat, a Garden Warbler, 8 Blackcaps, 13 Chiffchaffs, 3 Willow Warblers, a Goldcrest, 14 Blue, 3 Great and 2 Willow Tits, 2 Chaffinches, a Brambling, 16 Siskins, a Rustic and 16 Reed Buntings. We still saw a Red-backed Shrike and a Sand Martin too. In the afternoon I saw a Great Egret through our kitchen window. In the evening Hanna went to photograph the lunar eclipse, I was happy to see it from our balcony.

During the week I visited Siikalahti every day at least on my lunch-hour but it seemed that this year was not my year. On the 10th day evening we went to the fields even though it was full moon. Birds were shy but it seemed that Great Snipes were already so fat that they were easier to catch. I caught 3 Great Snipes and a Woodcock and we still saw a late Nightjar.

On the 11th day we were ringing in Siikalahti while watching Cranes coming to roost in the evening. Hanna had a few students who were seeing ringing first time ever. We caught a Wren, 2 Robins, a Bluethroat, a Fieldfare, 2 Chiffchaffs, 7 Long-tailed and 1 Blue Tit, 2 Chaffinches and 3 Yellowhammer and we caunted 720 Cranes.

On the 12th day I went twitching again with Minna, Merja and Veikka Kosonen. This time we headed north to Nurmes Valtimo Murtovaara where a European Stonechat had been for some time already. It was a long drive but the bird was found immediately. In windy weather it was hiding on the bushes quite a lot but after all I managed to get some kind of pictures. We also heard several Hazel Hens, a flock of 50 Waxwings were flying around and also a Grey-headed Woodpecker was seen. On the way back we saw a Merlin.

On the 13th of September we were in Lietteenlahti again and still the place didn’t pay expectations. A Great Snipe was flushed from the meadow but only 43 birds were caught. a Wren. 6+1c Robins, 2 Song Thrushes, a Lesser Whitethroat, 4 Blackcaps, 2 Chiffchaffs, 4 Willow Warblers, 2 Goldcrests, 9 Long-tailed, 4 Blue, 4 Great and 2 Willow Tits and 2 Reed Buntings were caught. Then in short drive around some fields we saw a probable hybrid between Hen and Pallid Harrier and a stunning “Börringe” Common Buzzard. In the evening we did duck-counts again but only better birds were 9 Gadwalls.

On the 14th day it was again Kukonkanta-morning and we caught 92 birds; a Wren, 9 Robins, a Bluethroat, a Blackbird, a Redwing, 2 Song Thrushes, a Garden Warbler, 7 Blackcaps. 20 Willow Warblers, a
14.9. oli taas Kukonkannan vuoro ja saalis oli taas parempi 92 lintua; peukaloinen, 9 punarintaa, sinirinta, musta-, punakylki- ja 2 laulurastasta, 1 lehto- ja 7 mustapääkerttua, 20 Chiffchaffs, a, Willow Warbler, a Goldcrest, 3 Blue and 6+1c Great Tits, 4 Chaffinches, 3 Rustic and 24+1c Reed Buntings. We also saw a Red-throated Pipit and 3 Rustic Buntings migrating. In the afternoon we visited Saari where in Pohjanranta we saw a flock of 101 Canada and 3 Greylag Geese and also 10 Stock Doves, a Great Grey Shrike and some Linnets and so on were seen.

During the week on the 15th day I saw a Capercaillie flying high one the sky a long distance over Siikalahti. Also the first young Pallid Harrier was finally seen and then in the afternoon in Saari Jyrkilä I saw another one. On the 17th day I saw 4 Red-throated Divers and 5 Stock Doves on the dam-road. In the evening we saw a Short-eared Owl in Kaukola and then caught 2+2c Woodcocks, 1c Great Snipe which was much fatter than 3 weeks earlier when we had ringed it. There was also a pack of about 10 Wild Boars on the field and a Red Fox was trying to catch same birds with me, which made birds pretty shy. Anyway I also caught 3 Meadow and 2 Red-throated Pipits. But then the bird of the evening was caught on another field where only bird I caught was a young Corn Crake!

At weekend we started 20th of September again in Kukonkanta. Again there were several local birders with us and even though there weren’t many birds on the bushes, more especially Chaffinches on the sky, we finally got a nice present. Altogether we caught 2 Dunnocks, 4 Robins, a Fieldfare, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Blackcap, 9 Chiffchaffs, a Willow Warbler, 6 Goldcrests, 15+2c Blue, 9 Great and 2 Willow Tits, a Chaffinch, 1+1c Reed Bunting and finally a long waited South Karelia (311) and Parikkala-tick (274) – a Little Bunting! Otherwise we saw only a Merlin and 88 Canada Geese. Because of the rain we had to stop ringin a bit earlier than we had hoped. In the afternoon we did a short trip to fields nearby and the only birds to mention were 3 Hazel Hens, 3 Hen Harriers and a Queen of Spain Fritillary.

On Sunday the 21st of September the rain ruined our ringing-plans. After all I left birding at midday with Erkko Elonen. We checked several places in Saari area and found 7 Great Egrets, plenty of Hen Harriers, a Pallid Harrier, 2 Rough-legged Buzzards, a Merlin, 16 Stock Doves, 12 Golden Plovers, plenty of Great Grey Shrikes, a Red-throated Pipit and a Lapland Longspur and so on. In the evening we continued to Siikalahti where we first studied both Bean Geese and then saw surprisingly few ducks from the tower, but 4 Gadwalls and 3 Smews were amongst them. Then we still went to the dam-road where we counted the all time record 1040 Cranes, 23 Great Egrets and saw a very late Nightjar.

On the 19th of July we tested ringing on our new place in Kukonkanta. The expectations weren’t too high but anyway we caught 5 Sedge and 11 Blyth’s Reed Warblers, a Reed Warbler, 4 Common Whitethroats, 6 Garden Warblers, 5 Willow Warblers, a Goldcrest, 2 Blue Tits, a Great Tit and a Yellowhammer. We also saw a White-backed and a Grey-headed Woodpecker and a Golden Oriole. Later we visited Siikalahti where we saw a couple of Great Egrets and a Black Kite.

The previous morning had been so good that we decided to go to Kukonkanta again on Sunday. We thought most of the birds would be same controls but no. We ringed an Icterine Warbler, 8 Sedge and 18 Blyth’s Reed Warblers, 10 Common Whitethroats, 5 Garden Warblers, 2 Blackcaps, 2 Chiffchaffs, 5 Willow Warblers, 3 Blue and 2 Great Tits, 4 Common Rosefinches, a Yellowhammer and 3 Reed Buntings – and we didn’t get a single control. Again we saw a Grey-headed and a Golden Oriole and a Black Woodpecker. In the evening we went to Siikalahti again and saw 10 Great Egrets, 2 Gadwalls and a Great Reed Warbler.

On the 21st of July we visited Saari Pohjanranta and it was worthy as we found a Bar-tailed Godwit, a Little Ringed Plover, a Broad-billed Sandpiper and a Dunlin and we saw a small migrating flock of Common Scoters. Then in our garden we still saw an Oystercatcher and it was the last time it was seen. On the 22nd day I visited Pohjanranta again and saw a Black-tailed Godwit, a Whimbrel and the same Dunlin and Little Ringed Plover. On the next day all the other better birds were gone but I saw a Broad-billed Sandpiper again and it was there still on the 25th day. Then we also saw a familiar Pygmy Owl near Siikalahti and while we were watching this tiny owl we saw a Black Kite flying over it. Otherwise there wasn’t anything to tell from the week.

On the 26th day we were having SSP-ringing in Papinlahti and we caught a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Song Thrushes, 5 Sedge and 10 Blyth’s Reed Warblers, a Lesser and 1+1c Common Whitethroats, a Garden Warbler, 9 Willow Warblers, 8 Pied Flycatchers, a Great Tit and a Reed Bunting. One Golden Oriole was still singing and another one was seen. In the evening we made one more place for a net in Kukonkanta and saw a Little Ringed Plover there.

On the 27th of July we were in Kukonkanta again and we caught altogether 117+3c: an Icterine Warbler, 22+3c Sedge and even 40 Blyth’s Reed Warblers, 2 Lesser and 6 Common Whitethroats, 12 Garden Warblers, 6 Blackcaps, 3 Chiffchaffs, 13 Willow Warblers, 7 Pied Flycatchers, 2 Blue Tits, a Tree Sparrow and 2 Reed Buntings. A Northern Nutcracker, a Black Kite and a Black Woodpecker flew over us. Later we visited Pohjanranta but saw nothing. But in Siikalahti we counted already 28 Great Egrets.

On the 28th of July there was a female Gadwall with 2 ducklings, 11 Pochards, 2 Smews, a Black Kite and 2 Reed Warblers in Siikalahti and we saw the same Pygmy Owl again. And on the 29th day we saw one more Reed Warbler and heard a Black Woodpecker.

On the 30th day we visited Saari but saw only a Golden Plover and family of Linnets. In the evening we did the first autumn duck-count in Siikalahti and saw 12 Canada Geese, 4 Gadwalls, a Northern Pintail, even 18 Pochards, 3 Smews, a Great Bittern, 26 Great Egrets, 2 Grey Herons and so on. I also saw a Black Kite, a Marsh Warbler and a couple of Nuthatches and Hanna saw a young Yellow Wagtail.

On the last day of July the most surprising observation was 240 Common Scoters that were migrating but started flying around Siikalahti and then 90 birds decided to land to the bay! I had never seen a single Common Scoter in this 1 meter deep bay before. We also saw a Black Kite, a couple of Hen Harriers and so on. Then we still visited Pohjanranta but saw nothing.

On the 1st of August we had SSP and Hanna continued alone when I had to go to work. We caught a Common Snipe, a Tree Pipit, a Robin, a Common Redstart, a Whinchat, a Song Thrush, 3 Sedge and 9 Blyth’s Reed Warblers, 6 Lesser and 7 Common Whitethroats, 2 Garden Warblers, 2 Willow Warblers, a Pied Flycatcher and 1c Reed Bunting. On my lunch-hour I saw a Black Kite again in Siikalahti.

At weekend we were both mornings again in Kukonkanta. On Saturday we were busy especially at sunrise and it started to rain already at 9 a.m. when we had to stop. Anyway we caught more birds than ever – 140+3c: a Tree Pipit, a Blackbird, 16+2c Sedge, 41+1c Blyth’s Reed and 2 Reed Warblers, 6 Common Whitethroats, 20 Garden Warblers, 3 Blackcaps, 31 Willow Warblers, 7 Blue and 2 Great Tits, 2 Common Rosefinches and 8 Reed Buntings. In the evening we saw a Hen Harrier, the same young Yellow Wagtail, a flock of 20 Long-tailed Tits and egrets in Siikalahti.

Hopes were high on Sunday too but morning was much quieter. Especially Blyth’s Reed Warblers had moved on. We caught 3 Robins, 27+1c Sedge and 12+2c Blyth’s Reed Warblers, a Reed Warbler, 5 Lesser and 5 Common Whitethroats, 23 Garden Warblers, 2 Blackcaps, 17 Willow Warblers, a Goldcrest, 2 Pied Flycatchers, 5 Blue Tits, a Great Tit and a Reed Bunting – so altogether 114+3c. We saw a Nutcracker and a Grey-headed Woodpecker again. In the evening we counted 29 Great Egrets and saw also 2 Bitters, a Grey Heron, a Spotted Redshank and a flock of 31 Long-tailed Tits in Siikalahti.

During the week the record-breaking hot weather started to get weaker finally and it felt more like autumn. Anyway there weren’t many birds to see: On the 4th of August I saw the same Black Kite and Pygmy Owl and on the 5th day I visited Pygmy Owl again.

On the 6th day 3 Whimbrels were migrating in a flock of Eurasian Curlews ad on the 7th day I saw even 15 Red-backed Shrikes in Lahdensuo. We also counted Barnacle Geese and there were 76 ad and 30 juv in Joukio and 48 ad and 64 juv in Kangaskylä. On the 8th day we visited Saari but saw next to nothing.

On the 9th of August we were in Kukonkanta again and caught 2 Wrynecks, 2 Redstart, 26+1c Sedge and 12+1c Blyth’s Reed Warblers, 6 Lesser and 9 Common Whitethroats, even 50+1c Garden Warblers, 3 Blackcaps, 15 Willow Warblers, a Goldcrest, a Pied Flycatcher, 2 Blue Tits, a Great Tit, 1c Common Rosefinch and 2 Reed Buntings. A Red-breasted Flycatcher was briefly seen but even bigger surprise was our old friend Markus Keskitalo who was visiting Parikkala and left birding early in the morning and had been driving with open windows as usual and suddenly heard lots of birds singing. In this time of year birds aren’t usually singing so he stopped and then heard some speaking and recognized it was my voice. Then he followed the voice inside the bushes and found us photographing the Wrynecks we had just caught. The singing bird had been our players. After ringing we went to tick the Pygmy Owl to Elissa and later I still made a short forest-trip and saw a family of Hazel Hens and a Black Woodpecker. In the evening we went to Siikalahti where we counted 45 Great Egrets and saw a flock of 6 Stock Doves and heard a Golden Oriole with Markus and Anna-Stiina.

On the 10th day we had SSP and we caught a Tree Pipit, a Robin, a Blackbird, 2 Sedge and 2 Blyth’s Reed Warblers, 7 Lesser and 6 Common Whitethroats, 4 Garden Warblers, a Pied Flycatcher, 3 Red-backed Shrikes, a Jay, a Common Rosefinch, 2 Yellowhammers and 5 Reed Buntings. Late in the evening we did a short visit to fields nearby where we found a few Woodcocks, a couple of Common Snipes and a single Great Snipe. But it was very calm weather with full moon so it was impossible to catch any snipes. We only ringed one young Skylark. We also saw Nightjars here and there, altogether 9 birds.

During the week I saw again a couple of Black Kites every time I was in Siikalahti, also a White-tailed Eagle was showing up a couple of times. There were quite a few other raptors too but nothing better. I visited the same fields very briefly one night and saw already 5 Great Snipes but we have to wait darker night to catch them. On the 12th of August we did duck-counts again but only better birds were the same Gadwalls. Otherwise the week didn’t give any surprises either except a Nuthatch in Kangaskylä.

On the 1st of July we still met with Pirkka and his family in Siikalahti but in very windy weather we didn’t see anything special. On the 2nd of July we went to ring 2 nestlings of Nightjar. While walking towards the nest we flushed a female Capercaillie.

On the 3rd of July I went to check that a Black Kite was still on the top of the tree next to its nest. In the evening we went to search for Short-eared Owl chicks and we found 3 of them but they were already flying. We managed to get pretty good pictures of one bird. There were also Long-eared Owl fledglings nearby but they were too shy. On the 4th day I visited cemetery and saw a Grey-headed Woodpecker, a young Wryneck looking out from the nest-hole and heard a Golden Oriole and an Icterine Warbler. In Kukonkanta we heard a Common Reed Warbler and saw a family of Little Ringed Plovers – two young birds were flying well already.

On the 5th day we went to Kesusmaa areas where we managed to make this Atlas-square better. In cemetery the Wrynecks were out from their nest and they seemed to be everywhere. We also heard 2 Golden Orioles. In the evening I went to a proper night-trip to Saari with Arttu Valonen. The trip started well when we found 2 fledlings of Great Grey Owl! But then next 5 hours we were just counting Corn Crakes (48), Long-eared Owls (1 ad+11 juv) and Blyth’s Reed Warblers (7).

When the sun was rising Arttu dropped me to Papinlahti where Hanna had already put up the mist-nets at 3:30 a.m. Right away we had a feeling that there will be lots of birds and for once we were right. On the first two rounds we got plenty of both Great and Blue Tits but then surprisingly the next round was empty. But luckily then the rush continued and on one round we got more than 30 birds. After all we got a Robin, a Redwing, a Song Thrush, a Blyth’s Reed Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat, 14+1c Common Whitethroats, 3 Willow Warblers, a Pied Flycatcher, 18+1c Blue and 54 Great Tits, a Bullfinch, a Yellowhammer and a Reed Bunting. So altogether we had got 98r+2c = 100 birds!

During the day we went to twitch a Common Quail in Koitsanlahti Syrjärinne and then went to check that everything was OK with Grey Wagtails in Kokkolanjoki – but we found only 1 male and then saw one female-type bird very briefly in flight. Young birds had probably already spread around the river. Once we were back at home Hanna found a tiny young Common Sandpiper from our garden.

On the 7th day I saw a Black Kite and a Great Egret on my lunch-hour and in the afternoon we did a short field-trip and saw Short- and Long-eared Owls, a Hen Harrier, Stock Doves and so on. Then I still saw a flock of 60 migrating Common Scoters in our garden.

On our 25th anniversary it was a storm and very rainy. After my work we went to eat to Iloinen Pässi and then decided to visit Saar Pohjanranta if the storm had dropped any waders there. Luckily we found 8 Dunlins and a Little Stint which were my 200th and 201st Parikkala year-ticks. I have got every year since 2013 more than 200 species in Parikkala.

On the 9th of July we did the second duckling-count in Siikalahti. There were already lots of Mallards, 348 birds and of course mainly adult males but also 158 Wigeons. It was nice to find 2 families of Common Pochards too. But gulls, terns and grebes had really had bad summer as storms and crows had destroyed almost all their nests. We also saw 4 Great Egrets, a Grey Heron, a Black Woodpecker, once again a Black Kite and I heard a Nuthatch.

Next couple of days I didn’t see anything special but on the 12th of July we did SSP-ringing again. We caught a Common Snipe, a Robin, a Song Thrush, a Blyth’s Reed Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat, 17+1c Common Whitethroats, 4+1c Willow Warbler, a surprise female Red-breasted Flycatcher, 2 Pied Flycatchers, a Great Tit, finally out first Willow Tit in this place, a Greenfinch, 2 Common Rosefinches, a Yellowhammer and 2+2c Reed Buntings. We also heard a Black Woodpecker, a Golden Oriole and a few Common Crossbills and I saw 3 Cormorants.

After SSP we did a quick butterfly-trip and managed to find 5 Poplar Admirals and 4 White Admirals. It was finally warm, even very hot day but anyway we still went to build a new ringing place to Kukonkanta. A huge ditch had been made to our old place so we had to change to a new place there.

On the 1st of June we had SSP-ringing in Papinlahti and we caught 4+3c Common Whitethroats, a Pied Flycatcher, a Red-backed Shrike and a Common Rosefinch. We also ringed young Jackdaws on one of our owl nestbox. In the evening I still did a short trip to fields and to Siikalahti dam-road. I found a Taiga Bean Goose, a Hen Harrier, a Great Snipe, a Short-eared Owl, a young Boreal Owl that was right outside the nest-box where it had been living, heard a Savi’s Warbler and a Great Reed Warbler and saw a European Nuthatch.

On the 2nd day only better observations were a too distant female-plumaged harrier and Boreal Owl fledlings that I found at night. And on the next day only birds I saw were 3 Oystercatchers.

On the 4th of June I saw a Black Kite on my lunch-hour and in the evening we went to ring the 2 smaller Tawny Owl youngsters. At night we still visited dam-road and heard a Savi’s, a Great Reed and a Common Reed Warbler.

On the 5th day I saw 2 Red-necked Phalaropes and a Black Kite on my lunch-hour. In the afternoon we did a trip to Saari but only better birds we found were a River and a Common Reed Warbler and a Grey Heron. Then we found another Grey Heron on the way back to home in Särkisalmi. On the next day I saw just the same birds as earlier.

On the 7th of June we did a proper night-trip to Saari but found nothing special. 22 Corn Crakes, 5 Great Snipes, Long-eared Owls, a Short-eared Owl, 5 Nightjars, 21 Thrush Nightingales, an Icterine Warbler, 30 Blyth’s Reed and 4 Marsh Warblers, 3 Golden Orioles and so on were found. We visited Soininmäki forests too and found a Hazel Hen singing, a Three-toed Woodpecker drumming actively and 2 Red-breasted Flycatchers singing. In Tarvassaari we still found a Great Reed Warbler which we decided to catch and ring and we also saw 2 Red-throated Divers flying over us.

On the 8th day we had SSP again and we caught a Sedge and a Bylth’s Reed Warbler, 3+2c Common Whitethroats, a Willow Warbler, 3c Great Tits and 2+1c Reed Warblers. In the evening we made the first stop in Siikalahti and surprisingly heard a Bearded Reedling calling. We played some tape and it came well visible and it was so aggressive that we decided to put up a mist-net and ring it. All local birders who came to see the bird managed to see it well.

When we arriving back at home we found a young White-backed Woodpecker on our garden. Late in the evening we still went to a short trip and found a Great Snipe and a new Common Reed Warbler.

On the 11th of June I saw a Spotted Redshank and a couple of Ruffs which were already on their autumn-migration. On the 12th day we continued mapping Siikalahti and did night-counts. On the southern side of the bay we found a Spotted Crake, 13 Water Rails, a White-backed Woodpecker, a Marsh, a Great Reed, a Common Reed Warbler and a Golden Oriole.

On the 13th day we continued counts and my better observations were a Hazel Hen family, a White-tailed Eagle, a Lesser Spotted and a White-backed Woodpecker and again a new Common Reed Warbler. Hanna found a family of Nuthatches which I had to go to twitch too. On the 15th day counts I saw a Black Kite, 3 White-backed and 6 Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, an Icterine Warbler, a Common Reed Warbler and the same Great Reed Warbler. In the evening we saw a Tundra Bean Goose, a Great Snipe and then we went to check that everything was OK with Tawny Owl – at least 2 of them were already out from the nestbox. And on the next day we managed to see an adult owl too.

On the 16th day I counted 24 adult and 35 juv Barnacle Geese in Saharanta and in the evening we saw 4 Oystercatchers flying over the village. We also went to see a Nightjar that Hanna had found incubating. On the 17th day Hanna found a Yellow Wagtail in Saharanta and at night I went to twitch a Quail as Rautjärvi-tick but I didn’t hear it.

On the 19th of June I saw a female Garganey on the dam-road and in the evening we went to check some fields and found even 9 Great Snipes on one field and 3 more on another field. And now all the Tawny Owls were out begging food.

At Midsummer morning we slept a little bit longer and then headed to Tähtiniemi to search for a Greenish Warbler that had been found in recordings that had been made on one summer-cottage. After some searching we managed to find it. Then we headed to Rautjärvi and decided to try to twitch the Quail again but again without luck. But on a bog nearby we caught and ringed 3 young Common Greenshanks. On Kokkolanjoki we saw a couple of Grey Wagtails and after some searching we managed to find their nest.

On the 21st of June we had SSP again and we caught a Sedge Warbler, 2c Common Whitethroats, 1c Garden Warbler, 3+1c Willow Warblers, 10 Blue and 2+1c Great Tits and a surprise Crested Tit and a Reed Bunting. In the evening crazy news were out as a young boy had photographed the first ever Dalmatian Pelican somewhere in Finland! Thanks to Martin Helin and Karoliina Hämäläinen the location was revealed and it had been in Kökar island a couple of days earlier. So the news was old after all but luckily there were some birders in Kökar and the bird was located! So we had to start planning a big twitch – but first we left to eat crepes to Hanna’s parents – there must be some order in life…

While we were eating crepes I decided to book a boat for the next morning. Hanna, Elissa and Veikka Kosonen were also ready to go twitching so there were still 21 places in a big boat. After I had put a message to Lintutiedotus it took only a couple of minutes to get the boat full.

We tried to sleep a couple of hours but before midnight we met in our parking place and soon left towards Parainen. It was a long drive but finally we turned to Saaristotie where we saw the first wave of happy twitchers driving towards us. Finally at 5:30 a.m. we were on Nauvo ferry and a half an hour later on Korppoo ferry with several other twitchers. Then we still had to wait for an hour in the harbor before our boat Princess Explorer arrived. Luckily all 25 twitchers had came early and at 7:40 we started sailing towards Kökar.

It took 2 hours to get to Kökar and on the way I had got some ridiculous year-ticks as I hadn’t seen sea at all this year – Common Eider, Mute Swan and Arctic Tern.

Finally we were on Kökar and out captain had booked a couple of taxis for us. The first car was already there so 8 first ones started driving towards the place where the Dalmatian Pelican had been also this morning. We had been driving only some hundreds of meters when we got a call that the pelican was in flight! The rest of our group that was still on the harbor saw it! It was flying close to the wind-mill and with that information we managed to see the bird with Hanna. But we were on the front-seat, it was impossible to see it from the back of the car before it flew behind some trees. So we drove after it to Västerfjärden where it had been also on the previous evening fishing. We could see the bay well from the bird-tower but the furthest part of bay was invisible. After some waiting we decided to leave to the place where the bird had been seen most. And of course we got a call that the bird was flying again. Only I managed to see it flying low behind some tree again, but now it was flying towards the islet where it had been seen most.

We drove along a small track towards Storstensudden where the bird had been watcher. Of course another car was driving towards us and there was no room to pass it. In this car were the owners of the road and they had promised that the early morning twitchers could use the road but it seemed that it wasn’t early morning anymore. So we had to continue by feet as our taxi had to reverse back to a bigger road. Veikka and Teo Ylätalo, who had already seen the bird a couple of times, passed us by bike that they had rented from the harbor. And soon we saw them on a top of a rock and luckily the Dalmatian Pelican was on their scopes as it was on its ordinary islet.

Some of our group was still on the harbor, but they had seen the bird already. And now finally the last twitchers that had been in our car managed to see it. And soon taxis brought the rest of our group to watch the bird. It was quite far but well visible. After some time it flew a little bit but landed to the sea and after some swimming it climbed to another islet where it stayed until we decided to call the taxis to get us back to the harbor.

The way back to Korppoo was happy and on the way I still managed to get a couple of year-ticks: a Black Guillemot and a Razorbill. Then in Korppoo there was really bad Midsummer traffic-jam. Luckily we managed to get to second ferry to Nauvo and then it took an hour to get to another ferry to Parainen. Luckily I managed to sleep a little while waiting for the ferries.

In Turku there were a White Stork couple breeding and in Raisio a Long-billed Dowitcher and then further in Jyväskylä an Eurasian Stone-curlew but we (except Veikka) were too tired to think about any more twitching. On the way we tried briefly to twitch a Ferruginous Duck in Salo Omenojärvi but we saw only a family of Pochards and a Caspian Tern. After we had eaten we continued to Kouvola where Elissa eptied her mail-box and then we continued to Parikkala. There we still went to listen to young Tawny Owls before the trip was over.

On the next day I was really tired but on the 24th of June we went to ring young Common Kestrels in Rautalahti, saw a couple of Whimbrels in Tönkinsuo and then went to check that Nightjar-youngsters had been hatched – but they surely were still too young to ring. Then we continued to Rautjärvi Kokkolanjoki and ringed 6 nestlings of Grey Wagtail. We still continued to a short field-trip and saw a Great Snipe.

On the 25th day we did only a short afternoon-trip and found a Pygmy Owl in Yrttitarha. And on the 26th day there were again 3 Oystercatchers in the village. On the 27th day we did the first duck-count where we tried to count all ducklings. It as easy to say that there aren’t many birds on the northern side of Siikalahti anymore. Only better observations were a few Gadwalls, a Grey Heron and a Spotted Redshank.

On the 28th day we drove to Mikkeli to my cousin’s birthday-parties. There we made only some atlas-records like a nests of a Treecreeper and a Wren. On the 29th day I went to check that everything was OK with the Grey Wagtails. Then in the afternoon we went to Saari where we saw a Black Kite in Akonpohja, a couple of Gadwalls in different places and found a nest of Golden Orioles.

On the 30th of June my brother Pirkka arrived for a short visit with his wife Anitta and two older children Iina and Veikka. In the afternoon we tried to find Golden Orioles in the cemetery but found only an Icterine Warbler and a nest of a Wryneck. At night we did a tour in the area around the village and Siikalahti with Pirkka and Veikka and even though it was already very quiet, we managed to find several Long-eared Owl fledlings, 2 Short- eared Owls, a Red-throated Diver, a few Great Snipes, several Blyth’s Reed Warblers, a Common and a Great Reed Warbler and a River Warbler. So we got a few good year-ticks for Pirkka.
